Crossing Party Lines in Action

Many people have asked to see what they are getting into before attending one of our meetings.  Below is a video of an actual CPL conversation, edited from 90 minutes to just 30 to give you a taste.
Crossing Party Lines honors and respects each participant’s privacy. We don’t record, produce transcripts, or pass on what people share. The video below is an exception.

What to Look for in This Video

CPL conversations follow a consistent format designed to create safety, balance, and respectful dialogue across differences.  In this video, you’ll see how this format plays out, get a chance to “meet” actual members and hear their perspectives, and see the moderator step in to remind participants of our Crossing Party Lines norms. We begin with a short welcome then move to breakout rooms for the moderated discussions.   We end with each participant sharing closing remarks and our lead moderator announcing upcoming events. Moderators encourage participants to:
  • Prioritize perspective sharing over debate – We are not here to win, convince, or change people’s minds.
  • Treat everyone with respect – We do not allow name calling, blaming, shaming or otherwise demonizing people with different views.
  • Speak only for themselves – We want to hear why their views make sense for them.

Questions Inspired by the Video

Why is this such a small group?

This was a special recording event. CPL usually does not record conversations, so attendance was intentionally small. Typical numbers for each breakout room range from 10 to 14 participants.

No. While all voices/views are welcome and appreciated, who you will encounter at a given CPL conversation depends on who chooses to attend that night.

Yes. At the top of the description of this particular event we stated that it would be recorded and that we would use the recording on this website.  And at the start of the meeting, each participant explicitly acknowledges the recording and gives permission. We cut most of these sections out to make room for other parts of the conversation.

Not at all.  We have pretty much equal numbers of men and women in our community.  Attendance at any particular event varies according to topic.

We at CPL believe labels, even party affiliation, get in the way of understanding.  Some people want to share their affiliation and that’s ok, but we don’t ask.  As you watch the video you’ll see that what a person shares tells us a lot more about their views than a label would.

Chat is disabled during the conversation so there’s one shared dialogue, not side discussions. It opens after the formal discussion ends.

Our members range in age from 16 to 89, though there are more from the over 40 crowd.  Our group of moderators skews younger. If you are younger, join us and help ensure that your generation is well represented.

CPL 200: Moral Foundations in Political Conversation

Moral Foundations Theory provides a useful framework for talking politics.

We begin by discussing each of the six foundations and getting a taste of how they can manifest differently in different people.

This leads to exploring some of the tensions intrinsic within the foundations themselves, which opens the door to moving from the moral/immoral dichotomy to an appreciation of how interacting with people who are differently moral to us leads to a more nuanced view of any issue and eventually to better solutions.

In this workshop you will:

  • Learn to recognize the moral underpinnings of your own views
  • Listen for indications that one or more of the six moral foundations is at play in a political discussion.
  • Bring morality into a discussion in a non confrontational way
