Change Doesn't Start with Shouting. It Starts with You.

You don’t need a platform, a title, or a following to make a difference.
Small, human choices shape the world we live in — every day.

If Polarization Feels Overwhelming…

It’s easy to feel powerless when political conflict dominates the news. The problems seem enormous, and the loudest voices often get the most attention.

But polarization isn’t sustained only by national politics or social media.
It’s shaped — and softened — by everyday interactions.

What you do matters more than you think.

The Greatest Impact Is Local

Lasting change doesn’t usually begin at the national level.
It begins in homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities.

When people learn how to stay connected across differences, trust grows.
And trust is what allows communities — and democracies — to function.

This is where real influence lives.

Small Actions That Make A Real Difference

  • Get comfortable disagreeing without disconnecting
  • Take time to know people beyond their political labels
  • Stay informed without feeding outrage
  • Support efforts that reduce division and reward cooperation

You don’t have to do everything. You just have to do something.

What You Do Creates Ripples

Small, everyday choices shape the emotional and social climate around us. Here are some of the ways that happen.

Emotional Ripple: Changing the Temperature

When you respond with curiosity instead of contempt, tension drops.
Others often mirror your tone — even when disagreement remains.

When you refuse mockery or name-calling, respect becomes visible.
Over time, it resets expectations in groups and communities.

Admitting uncertainty invites real thinking.
People move beyond slogans and defensiveness.

Local engagement builds trust.
Trust makes participation feel meaningful again.

When cooperation is amplified, cynicism loses its grip.
Division stops feeling inevitable.

Does This Actually Work?

Research across psychology, neuroscience, and conflict resolution suggests that how we communicate matter, especially in polarized environments. Structured conversations, supported norms, and facilitated dialogue can reduce defensiveness, increase understanding, and rebuild trust over time. Crossing Party Lines draws on this growing body of research to design experiences that support healthier conversations, one interaction at a time.

This Is Why We Are Here

Crossing Party Lines exists to support people who want to engage this way — thoughtfully, humanly, and without pressure to agree.

Our conversations, workshops, and communities are designed to help you:

  • Practice staying present when views differ
  • Learn skills that reduce defensiveness
  • Build relationships that can hold disagreement

You don’t need to change the world alone. You just need a place to practice.

Check out our Calendar of Events to see how you can become involved.

CPL 200: Moral Foundations in Political Conversation

Moral Foundations Theory provides a useful framework for talking politics.

We begin by discussing each of the six foundations and getting a taste of how they can manifest differently in different people.

This leads to exploring some of the tensions intrinsic within the foundations themselves, which opens the door to moving from the moral/immoral dichotomy to an appreciation of how interacting with people who are differently moral to us leads to a more nuanced view of any issue and eventually to better solutions.

In this workshop you will:

  • Learn to recognize the moral underpinnings of your own views
  • Listen for indications that one or more of the six moral foundations is at play in a political discussion.
  • Bring morality into a discussion in a non confrontational way
