Is this okay if I’m nervous or it’s my first time?
Yes — feeling nervous is very common. You don’t need special skills, deep knowledge, or confidence to attend. Just bring your curiosity, and take part in whatever way feels right to you.
What actually happens at a CPL conversation?
CPL conversations are small, facilitated discussions focused on listening and understanding. The moderator explains the format and community norms at the start, then guides the conversation so it stays respectful and balanced. You’ll know what’s happening at each step.
Do I have to talk or share my views?
No. You’re always welcome to listen only — especially your first time. Speaking is optional, and you choose how much or how little you want to share.
Do I have to stay the whole time?
No. While most people stay for the full conversation, you’re free to step away or leave early if you need to. There’s no pressure to explain or justify your choice.
How are conversations kept respectful?
Each conversation is guided by a trained moderator and a few clear community norms. Moderators help manage the flow, make space for different voices, and step in if things get tense. We don’t assume you come in with respect for other sides. Instead, we help you treat one another with respect, which often leads to true respect.
What if I strongly disagree with others — or hear something I think is wrong?
Disagreement is expected. You’re encouraged to respond with curiosity rather than confrontation — asking questions, sharing your perspective, or choosing to let something pass. Moderators are there to help keep conversations constructive when tensions rise.
Who is this really for?
CPL is for people who want to talk across differences without turning conversations into fights — whether you’re deeply political, politically exhausted, or somewhere in between. You don’t have to be moderate, undecided, or looking to change your mind. You just need to be willing to listen and engage respectfully.
Is Crossing Party Lines partisan?
No. Crossing Party Lines is nonpartisan and does not promote specific political positions or policies. People from across the political spectrum participate, and all viewpoints are welcome as long as they’re shared respectfully.
What if I don’t feel like this is a good fit for me?
That’s completely okay. You’re welcome to attend once, observe, and decide for yourself. There’s no expectation to return, participate more deeply, or agree with anyone — including us.
Are events really free?
Yes. All CPL conversations and workshops are free and open to the public. We’re supported by donations and volunteers who believe this work should be accessible to everyone.
