Thoughts and Inspiration for Connecting Across Differences

We are Crossing Party Lines

What we do is get regular people together to talk about real issues with curious minds and open hearts. How we do it is by teaching and modeling the skills that allow us to… We are Crossing Party Lines. What we do is get regular people together to talk about

What Does Democracy Ask of Us?

As we move toward another election, we are going to hear a great deal about what is at stake. We are also going to hear a great deal about the people who see those stakes differently than we do. That is nothing new. Elections are supposed to involve disagreement. We are

Before You Ask Someone How They’re Voting…

Election season has a way of making us very interested in how other people are going to vote. Sometimes we ask directly: “Who are you voting for?” Other times we are a little more subtle: “What do you think of this candidate?” “Can you believe what they said?” “Are you

Thank you, America

What can conversations on the Camino teach us about democracy? From compulsory voting to citizen assemblies, people I met in Europe are watching the United States closely—and asking what it takes for ordinary people with different views to make decisions together.

CPL 200: Moral Foundations in Political Conversation

Moral Foundations Theory provides a useful framework for talking politics.

We begin by discussing each of the six foundations and getting a taste of how they can manifest differently in different people.

This leads to exploring some of the tensions intrinsic within the foundations themselves, which opens the door to moving from the moral/immoral dichotomy to an appreciation of how interacting with people who are differently moral to us leads to a more nuanced view of any issue and eventually to better solutions.

In this workshop you will:

  • Learn to recognize the moral underpinnings of your own views
  • Listen for indications that one or more of the six moral foundations is at play in a political discussion.
  • Bring morality into a discussion in a non confrontational way
