Get Trained to Moderate

Help bring respectful, curiosity-based conversation to life – and build skills you can use anywhere.

Why Moderators Matter

At Crossing Party Lines, skilled moderators create safe, thoughtful environments where people with different views can listen, speak, and be heard. Moderators help guide discussions so that every voice has space, curiosity is encouraged, and respectful connection is possible.

About Moderator Training

Crossing Party Lines Moderator Training is a science-based program designed to teach you how to facilitate respectful dialogue across differences. You’ll learn to support meaningful conversation — whether online or in person. It’s free — and your participation helps expand CPL’s reach. What the training includes:
  • Self-paced online lessons covering core facilitation skills
  • Virtual group discussions to practice with classmates
  • One-on-one coaching with an instructor
  • Practicum sessions where you moderate in real time
  • A mix of science, strategy, and practice built to grow your confidence and competence. Crossing Party Lines Moderator Training Syllabus
Duration: Six weeks — four weeks of lessons and two weeks of guided practice.

Who Can Take This Training

No prior experience is required. Whether you’re new to facilitation or already guiding groups in other settings, Moderator Training is designed to help you grow.

You don’t need to agree with everyone you moderate. You don’t need to be an expert on issues. What matters most is a willingness to help others be heard — and to practice the skills that make that possible.

CPL 200: Moral Foundations in Political Conversation

Moral Foundations Theory provides a useful framework for talking politics.

We begin by discussing each of the six foundations and getting a taste of how they can manifest differently in different people.

This leads to exploring some of the tensions intrinsic within the foundations themselves, which opens the door to moving from the moral/immoral dichotomy to an appreciation of how interacting with people who are differently moral to us leads to a more nuanced view of any issue and eventually to better solutions.

In this workshop you will:

  • Learn to recognize the moral underpinnings of your own views
  • Listen for indications that one or more of the six moral foundations is at play in a political discussion.
  • Bring morality into a discussion in a non confrontational way
