Conversations Are Easy to Start

They’re Hard to Sustain

Many of us want to talk about the issues that matter — but real conversations often stall or spiral.

  • People talk past each other.
  • Defensiveness creeps in.
  • Relationships feel fragile.

CPL conversations are designed to change how those conversations happen — so people can stay engaged without feeling attacked, overwhelmed, or pressured to agree.

What Makes CPL Conversations Different?

These aren’t debates, panels, or open mics.

They’re facilitated conversations built around curiosity, structure, and care.

Here’s what sets them apart:

  • They’re structured, not chaotic.
Conversations follow a clear flow so no one has to manage the room or fight to be heard.

  • They’re facilitated, not left to chance.
Trained moderators support the conversation, protect the tone, and help navigate tense moments.

  • They focus on understanding, not winning.
The goal isn’t agreement or persuasion — it’s listening, sharing honestly, and seeing where others are coming from.

  • Participation is flexible.
You’re welcome to speak, listen, or simply observe — especially your first time.

  • Respect is actively supported.
Clear norms help ensure everyone is treated with dignity, even when views differ.

What to Expect?

  • A moderator explains the format and community norms

  • You’re free to listen or participate

  • Conversations are guided and respectful

  • You can step away or leave early if needed

What Conversations Feel Like?

People often describe CPL conversations as calmer than expected and more thoughtful than typical political discussions.

Many leave with:

  • A new perspective

  • A moment of unexpected connection

  • Or simply the relief of knowing conversations like this are still possible

You don’t have to resolve anything to feel the conversation was worthwhile.

What You’ll Get Out of It?

Participants often say they:

  • Feel more confident engaging across differences

  • Listen with less defensiveness

  • Stay connected with people they disagree with

  • Leave feeling clearer, not more frustrated

  • See issues from more perspectives

These experiences carry into everyday life — with family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors.

What’s Not Required?

You don’t need to:
  • Change your mind
  • Represent a political group
  • Be articulate or outspoken
  • Have the “right” facts
Curiosity and a willingness to listen are enough.

Want to Know More?

How we choose our topics
  • Members suggest topics they want to discuss.  This varies according to current events.
  • Our Leadership Team reviews the list of suggested topics to choose the topics they believe will interest the majority of the members and support thoughtful discussion rather than debate.
  • Our Topic Team designs the conversations to fit within the allotted time and develops questions to help us understand why each person’s views make sense for them.
  • Each conversation starts with posters (in-person) or a short video (virtual)  introducing our community norms, which encourage active listening, curiosity, and sharing personal perspectives rather than proving we’re “right”.
  • Our trained moderators support the group norms. They help set a respectful tone, make sure everyone has the opportunity to participate (if they want to), and step in if things get tense so the conversation stays constructive.
  • Moderators do not steer opinions, seek agreement, or pass judgement on what is shared.

That’s completely normal. Many people attend their first conversation just to listen. You’re never required to speak, share personal views, or respond to every question. Participation is always your choice.

CPL 200: Moral Foundations in Political Conversation

Moral Foundations Theory provides a useful framework for talking politics.

We begin by discussing each of the six foundations and getting a taste of how they can manifest differently in different people.

This leads to exploring some of the tensions intrinsic within the foundations themselves, which opens the door to moving from the moral/immoral dichotomy to an appreciation of how interacting with people who are differently moral to us leads to a more nuanced view of any issue and eventually to better solutions.

In this workshop you will:

  • Learn to recognize the moral underpinnings of your own views
  • Listen for indications that one or more of the six moral foundations is at play in a political discussion.
  • Bring morality into a discussion in a non confrontational way
